How We Teach and Encourage Reading at LPS

In Nursery and Reception all children take part in:  

  • Reading and reading activities which are everywhere (for example repetitive texts, traditional tales, reading games, re - ordering sentences, name writing)
  • Phonics using the Letters and Sounds scheme
  • Parent library (Nursery) and book corners
  • One to one reading
  • Taking books home
  • Children have individual records which they take home

In Years 1 & 2 all children take part in:

  • One to one reading with an adult and change their books
  • Daily guided reading
  • Comprehension work
  • Daily phonics using the Letters and Sounds scheme
  • Taking books home
  • Children have individual records which they take home
  • Reading with books matched to their ability as well as reading freely
  • Children who need to catch up: additional phonics groups and one to one– Year 2

In Years 3 & 4 all children take part in:

  • Guided reading
  • Comprehension work
  • One to one reading with an adult
  • Children have individual records which they take home
  • Taking books home
  • Children who need to catch up: one to one support, targeted phonics groups, intervention groups for literacy

In Years 5 & 6 all children take part in:

  • Guided reading
  • Reading aloud once a week
  • Taking books home
  • Comprehension work
  • Children who need to catch up: one to one support, intervention groups for literacy

Additional support may be provided by a specialist teacher, Teaching Assistant , Reading Volunteer,  more able peer or secondary school child

We nurture a love of reading in all children including more able ones by: having a good choice of books; targeted reading clubs; arranging peer reading; reading  across the curriculum (eg in assemblies); celebrating one-off events such as World  Book Day; maintaining and using our School Library and book corners; holding Book Fayres; promoting reading aloud and story times in class.
